The end of the semester is upon us, which marks the beginning of a new year. What you have done or should have done in 2009 is over, and now is the time to look forward to 2010. That job fair you were meaning to go to but were too busy or the appointment you meant to make but forgot is over. With 2010 you will begin a new slate with a whole lot of opportunities, but how can you best capitalize on these opportunities? Simple, you must set New Year’s resolutions or goals. We at Career Development have devised a few key resolutions you can add to your list.

The first resolution is to come by our office where we can help point you in the right direction. We are located on the second floor in Bagby, take a left at the top of the stairs. We have great contacts and resources that can help lead you in the right direction. You can learn how to use Tiger Connections to find your next opportunity, check out one of our resources, speak with Ms. Neidert or Col. Snead, or finally figure out how to contact alumni effectively.

The second resolution should be to create a resume or make sure yours is up to date. It can be nearly impossible to find a job or internship without a resume. Stop by or visit us online at www.hsc.edu/careerdevelopment to view our helpful resources. Once you’ve completed a draft, bring it in for a critique.

Next on the list is to watch the calendar and pay attention to emails from Mr. Snead and Ms. Neidert. They always send reminders about Career Development events such as alumni dinners or job fairs. They will be talking a lot about the Alumni Career Expo on February 9th, and the College to Career Fair on February 23rd. Both events are well worth your time.

Finally you should make a resolution to land that job or internship before the end of the spring semester. Many people go through the motions of looking for a job, but never fully commit to actually landing a job. This will increase your chances of success.

Choose some New Years resolutions that you can be committed to, and that will help further your career. Stop by our office before the semester is over, or when we get back in January to get on track for success in 2010.

Here in Career Development we are always searching for new resources to help you find a job. One resource is Glassdoor.com. This website’s purpose is to “see what employees are saying” about their companies. The cool thing about this site is that it is totally anonymous, so you know you are getting unbiased information.

Glass Door is great to find out salaries of current employees at many different companies. To begin, visit www.glassdoor.com and type the name of the company you are interested in. There are usually five to ten different positions with their salaries posted. This web site gets all of its information from anonymous employee posts, so in order to see the salaries that have been posted you must post your own. As a student though, you can create a student account to view all of the information without contributing your own.

Not only does Glass Door show a variety of salaries for most companies it also shows reviews from employees, interview questions, and available jobs. The review of the company is helpful with the Pros and Cons both clearly listed as well as “Advice from Senior Management.” Interview reviews can also be a valuable tool because they were written by people who have been through the process with that company. Finally you can click on the job icon and see the overall satisfaction rating of employees.

I wanted to try out Glass Door for myself, so I logged in as a student by simply going to the bottom of the home page and clicking the link for “are you a student.” Then I searched Goldman Sachs, and found that some analysts can make up to $150k per year. Some of the pros to working with this company were that the “entire organization works as a team” an employee also said, “working with the smartest and most driven people.” On the other hand when I clicked on the Interview responses there was some negative feed back. “This was a very, very, very, very long process from beginning to end. The lack of display for professionalism is absolutely unbelievable.”

It is nice that you can find important inside information about a company without anyone from the company knowing. Now that you have the opportunity to get inside information, we expect you to use it! Stop by, call, or e-mail Career Development if you have questions.
