Charlie and Allen communicated via phone all summer exchanging ideas and thoughts concerning a potential fishing club. After they sorted out all of the details with each other and the school, their dream became a reality about two weeks into the 2009 school year. The club now has 27 members and is looking to grow.

This past weekend the club entered the National Guard FLW College Fishing Northern Division event on Lake Gaston in South Hill, VA. The event was for teams of two, so Charlie and Allen set out to South Hill with their poles and tackle. 40 teams participated in the event with schools such as Virginia Tech, West Point, and NC State. I guess you could say that Charlie and Allen were small fish in a big pond.

However, this did not deter the two fishermen and they set out in their boat guided by a pro fisherman. The conditions on Lake Gaston that day were cold and rainy, not the ideal conditions for bass fishing. With both men catching a few fish, only 2 of the fish Charlie caught qualified. This may seem like a bad day, but only 19 out of the 40 teams caught any fish in the tournament. Charlie’s pull was good enough for 3rd place out of 40 teams- a great first showing for the Anglers’ Club. Finishing behind Virginia Tech and NC State, Charlie and Allen brought home a $4,000 prize to be split between the College and the Anglers’ Club.

The Club has high hopes as the team of two now qualifies for the Regional event to be held on Lake Norman Nov. 7-9. With the prize money, the Club hopes to plan a fishing trip to the Eastern shore and possibly purchase a small boat to be used by Club members. For more information on FLW College fishing visit collegefishing.com. If you are interested in joining the Anglers’ Club, please contact Charlie Parrish at ParrishC@hsc.edu.
