Aiming for the Sky, but Hitting Middle Ground

Hampden-Sydney is a college of principles. This college is not for cheaters, thieves, or for individuals who tolerate those actions. Despite the human inability to live up to these standards perfectly, the ideals themselves are closely held components of the campus spirit.
However, it’s very easy to be cynical when someone holds up a code of conduct that seems too lofty, especially when experience (often neglecting the positive cases) exposes the impossibility of following such guidelines perfectly. It’s like watching a friend go on a diet; you’re not surprised when they …

It Time to Fix Our Classrooms

In recent months, Hampden-Sydney College has made quite a few additions and renovations to its facilities, including the construction of the new baseball stadium, Ty Cobb Ballpark, the renovation of the recently reopened Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest, and Venable Hall bathrooms.
The completion of all these projects begs the question:  will H-SC’s focus for future projects now shift to renovating and improving our classrooms?  According to Dr. Herbert L. King ’94, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, it appears that improvements to our classrooms are not far off, …

A school yearbook is a valued treasure of alumni, something for graduates to use to reminisce about the fond years of their college days. The Kaleidoscope, H-SC’s yearbook, has served that purpose. Although in the past our yearbook has been a highly prized possession, in the last five years the yearbook has declined in popularity for not only those receiving it, but also for those making it. And because of that the Student Finance Committee recently voted not to fund the Kaleidoscope’s production. Which means, as of now there are …

On October 8, 2011, Circle K International, the largest service organization on campus, held a party for over 90 elementary school students at Prince Edward County Elementary School. The party was the finale to a month-long program created by Circle K called Bringing Up Grades (BUGS). The program celebrated a group of third-graders who maintained or improved their grades for a month. The third-graders were rewarded for their good grades with ice cream, pizza, and other treats and prizes donated by Circle K. Third-graders who showed the most improvement in …

Student Tutors: Are We Paying them to do their Homework?

The mission of Hampden-Sydney’s Office of Academic Success is to “provide continuing services and assistance which promote success for Hampden-Sydney students.”
Among those services provided by the Office of Academic Success is the employment of student tutors in the academic disciplines of Latin, Greek, History, Economics, Psychology, and Biology. The academic departments also employ peer tutors for other subjects including Chemistry, Physics, and all of the Modern Languages, with the exception of Chinese.
“Our office coordinates tutoring for the campus, so all the other tutor coordinators on campus send their schedules, which …

Library Building in Disrepair

The future of Eggleston Hall has been a mystery for quite a while now. Cobwebs line both of the stately green double doors that face Via Sacra. The windows—equally laden with dust—look dull and dark from the bustling activity around the abandoned structure. Eggleston is old, dark, and unused. But there are curiously few reasons why the building has fallen into disarray.
Bagby Hall is roughly 21,000 square feet and houses academic advisors and provides space for the mathematics, language, and psychology departments. Morton Hall, similar in size, accommodates the classes …

First Week impressions

There are common worries that all students have stepping into their first week of college no matter where they are, and they span across the board. “Will I build new friendships? Will the classes be overwhelming? Will I even know where the classes are?” These concerns plague the minds of freshmen across the country, but at Hampden-Sydney College students are given an opportunity to address these worries easily. As a freshman, I can certainly testify to this. Our first week has been a tremendously welcoming experience, in which we have …

Tiger Lacrosse Heating Up

Winning season and tough losses to nationall-ranked teams put H-SC on the map

The weather has certainly gotten hotter over the past few weeks, but so has the Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse team.  Despite 4 losses on the season, the Tigers are starting to gain national recognition, moving up to a #20 national ranking.  Typically, a 10-4 record would not result in coming close to the Top 20 poll; however, all 4 Tiger losses have come to teams ranked in the top 15.  A boost in the Tigers’ résumé came in a road …

Senate Rejects Going Trayless

After months of controversy, Student Senate hears results of pilot program and votes “No”
On Wednesday, March 24, “going trayless” met its maker.
The unpopular policy, which received only one third of voter support in a Tiger Online poll, and had beleaguered students since the possibility had been breached early last semester, was voted down in a unanimous decision by the Student Senate.
In a final statement, Senate Chairman Scott Anderson ’10 said that going without trays was “not in the best interest of the student body.”
The meeting was designed to present facts …
