At any Saturday home game at Hampden-Sydney the professors who watch the game from the Wilson Center are a welcome and familiar sight, and it is usually the same professors who attend each game. This group of professors has become a fixture at the College. Students, who appreciate additional out-of-classroom time to interact with their professors, also respect them.
Decades ago the on-campus and out-of-classroom contact was even more pronounced, but with different generations come different priorities. This is not to say that newer professors do not value the students, but …

Merriam-Webster.com states that the word fraternity can be defined as “a group of people associated or formally organized for a common purpose, interest, or pleasure.” Nearly 70 percent of the Hampden-Sydney student body that is non-active in Greek Life may see Fraternities as simple promoters to party and have fun. This may be true at other colleges, but while all 10 active fraternities on the Hampden-Sydney campus engage and host weekend social activities, they also contribute significantly to the common good of Hampden- …

A student-athlete is a term used to describe the direct balance between a full-time student and a full-time athlete. After much in-depth investigation, it is safe to say that Hampden-Sydney College and its student-athletes fit this definition very well.
A typical student-athlete misses only a few class periods during the season for games or other athletic obligations; however, the number varies from sport to sport. “For our team, there are usually 3 classes missed per student per year,” Assistant Lacrosse Coach Jason Rostan said. For teams with more games on their …

College students are constantly looking to cope with overwhelming workloads and personal burdens. Staying busy might not be so hard in college, but remaining on task can be considerably difficult. While some students exercise a valiant effort towards their responsibilities, others avoid taking part in anything that might create more stress. Regardless of whether or not a student chooses to be productive, how he or she approaches dealing with everyday obligations can reflect a similar issue. A recent article from the Richmond Times-Dispatch titled “Painkiller overdose deaths triples” revealed how …

The Hampden-Sydney Bookstore is an important place for students on campus, whether it be for the purchase of books, stationary items, or other basic necessities. However, some faculty members have had trouble with the textbook acquisition process and pricing of the store. A professor, who wishes to remain anonymous, claims that he has had problems with students not being able to buy textbooks at the store due to over enrollment in the classes. The professor added that when the book is ordered by the Bookstore, it takes almost two weeks …

This Semester, the Fine Arts Department at Hampden-Sydney has hosted two major events at the Crawley Forum. First, on October 28, the College hosted the Claremont Trio, a world-renowned piano trio based in New York City that has performed in several big venues, including the Kennedy Center and has won awards for their performances, most notably the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson International Trio Award.
In addition to performing several pieces from their repertoire, the Trio also gave lectures and master classes to interested students as part of the Central Virginia Ensemble in Residence program. …

The curtains did not rise, nor did they part. The stage remained open and surrounded by a sizable crowd engaged in animated chatter. The set was simple, consisting of a high backed chair underneath a tall wooden balcony. The lights dimmed and the room grew quiet as the members of the audience began to take their seats. Shapes filed past on both sides of the now silent audience, and the eerie call was raised by the passing cast: “Oh for a muse of fire.” From the time that the actors …

Hampden-Sydney is a college of principles. This college is not for cheaters, thieves, or for individuals who tolerate those actions. Despite the human inability to live up to these standards perfectly, the ideals themselves are closely held components of the campus spirit.
However, it’s very easy to be cynical when someone holds up a code of conduct that seems too lofty, especially when experience (often neglecting the positive cases) exposes the impossibility of following such guidelines perfectly. It’s like watching a friend go on a diet; you’re not surprised when they …

In recent months, Hampden-Sydney College has made quite a few additions and renovations to its facilities, including the construction of the new baseball stadium, Ty Cobb Ballpark, the renovation of the recently reopened Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest, and Venable Hall bathrooms.
The completion of all these projects begs the question: will H-SC’s focus for future projects now shift to renovating and improving our classrooms? According to Dr. Herbert L. King ’94, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, it appears that improvements to our classrooms are not far off, …

A school yearbook is a valued treasure of alumni, something for graduates to use to reminisce about the fond years of their college days. The Kaleidoscope, H-SC’s yearbook, has served that purpose. Although in the past our yearbook has been a highly prized possession, in the last five years the yearbook has declined in popularity for not only those receiving it, but also for those making it. And because of that the Student Finance Committee recently voted not to fund the Kaleidoscope’s production. Which means, as of now there are …
