Where are All the Baseball Fans?
by: Alex Winfree ‘13Editor, the Tiger:
As spring has approached my sports interests have been revived. The ending of football and March Madness leaves a dull time in the world of sports to me. I have always been an avid fan of college football and basketball. I also closely follow the NBA and NFL. But spring brings baseball, the true American pastime. I have been saddened to see that more and more of the new friends I make have little to no interest in baseball. Most of them will watch the World Series, but that’s about it. People say it is too slow paced and boring, but that’s because they don’t understand the game and don’t give it a chance. Baseball is one of the hardest sports to play and the talent that even our small school produces should not be overlooked. I have been very impressed by the season our Hampden-Sydney Tigers have put together. The team is loaded with talent from the lead-off spot to the nine hole. Matt Brown is one of the best players in Division III baseball. So where is all the support for our baseball team? Whenever there is a football game you are sure to see all the students tailgating and watching the game. Lacrosse and basketball also draw pretty big crowds. But baseball never gets a big crowd. I’m tired of seeing the small crowds during baseball games. I would like to see more of the student body provide support for our baseball team, which is establishing itself as one of the finest baseball programs in the region. I would also like to see a revival of baseball support, not just here at H-SC, but nationwide. After going to my first Major League playoff game in October of last year, I can promise that there is nothing like an environment of happy, screaming, and drunk baseball fans. There is no better way to enjoy a nice, summer day than at the local baseball diamond, cheering on your favorite team. So stop being lazy H-SC students. As the school year winds down come out to some games and support the Tigers. I believe this team is good enough to do damage in the National Tournament with the support of the student body.
