Déjà Vu All Over Again

Editor, the Tiger:

After reading a letter to the editor in the April 2nd issue of The Tiger, I felt compelled to speak my mind.

In a letter to the editor entitled “Typical Déjà Vu,” a student criticized newly elected Student Body President Ken Simon claiming that Mr. Simon promised to open the Library 24/7.  I do not recall Mr. Simon promising that the Library would be open 24/7.   What I do remember is that Mr. Simon wanted to extend the library hours and promised to use his influence, if elected Student Body President, to convince the administration to extend the hours of operation.  When Mr. Simon won his election, he wrote in an email to the entire student body stating, “We will work to create a unified front on various issues of import, we will work to sustain the tradition of Hampden-Sydney, and we will work with the new Library Director Cy Dillon on getting the library opened for a longer period of time.”   The author of “Typical Déjà Vu” criticized the costs of opening the library 24/7, yet that same student ran for Student Body President on a platform of having Wi-Fi coverage for the entire campus.  I wonder how much having Wi-Fi coverage for the entire campus would cost?

I think the reason this student wrote his letter to the editor is clear.  Most recently, this student lost to Mr. Simon in the Student Body Presidential election.  As we approach the end of this school year, this should be a time to join together to reflect on the many great academic, athletic and social achievements we have been a part of at Hampden-Sydney College.  Our focus should be on how each of us can make this great institution called Hampden-Sydney College stronger, not only for us, but also for those that follow us.  We should be supporting Ken Simon as our elected Student Body President, not attacking him just because someone lost an election to him.
