Tennis Tigers Look for Back-to-Back ODAC Crowns
by: John Hobart ‘10
The last three years of Hampden-Sydney Tennis have been very successful, much of which can be attributed to three time ODAC Player of the year Will Moss. However, this year Moss has a supporting cast which is as strong as ever. His co-captain and doubles partner Rich Pugh “will look to dominate ODAC play as the top #2 guy in the conference,” according to Moss. Moss went on to praise the rest of the top 6 on the team, demonstrating his leadership as well as his confidence in his teammates. Moss raved about the rest of the team saying “Shad Harrell, Kevin Calhoun, Tal Covington, and Zack Pack round out the top 6. All are elite players who have the talent to do big things, and I expect nothing short of it from them.”
Before I go on, let me say a few words about the backbone of the team, Will Moss. As I said, he will be going for his fourth straight ODAC Player of the Year. On top of that, he is a member of the Kappa Alpha Order, just finished his term as Student Court Chairman, dominates the intramural fields, and this is all just off the top of my head. This team, led by a guy as impressive as Will, has a great chance to defend its ODAC crown and go deep into the NCAA tournament.
This week is a vital one to the team’s success. Matches Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will all be leading up to Friday’s matchup with the hated Generals from W&L. As I understand it they are somewhat of a D III tennis dynasty and they are not happy that the Tigers clawed the ODAC away from them last year.
The South Region Rankings came out this week putting Hampden-Sydney at #13 and W&L at #6. Our boys are ready to prove the rankings wrong and further establish a dynasty of their own. Moss describes the rivalry saying “we stole the ODAC crown from them last year so they are really looking to take it to us. They have improved and have a strong lineup, we will have to play our best and compete to win. But
I am confident that we will show up and play — we are hungry and want it bad.” The match will be Friday the 19th (that’s TODAY if you pick your paper up in time) at home at 3 pm.
The Tigers are undefeated so far, dominating Methodist, Virginia Wesleyan, and Ferrum. The season will be highlighted by conference matchups against Roanoke and Bridgewater as well as non-conference dates with Johns Hopkins, Salisbury, Mary Washington, and Washington College. Go Tigers.
