Baseball Season Has Been Full of Ups and Downs

With plenty of senior leadership this year, the baseball Tigers are still looking for the consistency they will need for a successful season. Hampden-Sydney sits at 8-6, but just 2-4 in ODAC play. They recently completed a Spring Break trip to Georgia and Alabama in which they defeated Piedmont College of Demorest, GA, but dropped both games of a double header with Huntingdon College of Montgomery, AL.

College baseball is a funny sport in that at the beginning of the season, you really have no clue who might be an impact player come tournament time. Coach Kinne used the Spring Break trip to give some guys chances and help some of the younger players establish themselves. One such player is Dan Nicoll. Senior captain Ben Brawley has been impressed by the immediate impact Nicoll has made. Ben was so impressed by Nicoll in the Huntingdon game that he told me “I’m not sure of his stats against Huntingdon, but check them – he did well.” Well, I checked them, and he did do well. Five innings pitched with 5 strikeouts and 0 runs on just 2 hits is very impressive, especially against a team like Huntingdon.

Senior ace Johnny West has continued to impress on the mound going 2-2 with a 2.64 ERA in five starts thus far. Zach Harrelson has impressed at the plate, hitting his first collegiate home run over the break. Matt Brown has hit four homeruns while batting .392 with 22 RBI in just 14 games. Also, if you haven’t had the chance to see Herbie Williams run the bases, you need to. The outfielder is hitting .315 with 10 stolen bases in 14 attempts.

After a double header at Emory and Henry this weekend, the Tigers will look for tons of fan support as they host a pair of games with W&L next Saturday, the 27th. Go Tigers.
