The Olympic Games Are Awesome
by: John Hobart ‘10The Winter Olympics have been kept me on the edge of my seat over the past week. The best thing about the Winter Games is that there is actually something to watch during the day. No longer do I have to watch SportsCenter over and over again between classes (at least for another week). Before I get too far along with talking about how exciting the Winter Games have been in Vancouver, let’s revisit the Opening Ceremonies. Oh wait, you turned them off too? They were terrible. Apart from the Great One lighting the torch, all I saw was weird dancing…
But anyways, as it stands now we are holding our ground in the medal count. Just behind Germany and right ahead of France and Canada is great with me (thank goodness those Koreans ran into each other in the Speed Skating). One of the top stories has been the pretty face of Lindsey Vonn and her injured shin. The 2008 and 2009 overall World Cup Champion has been supposed to give us five more medals before developing a bone bruise in her shin. For those of you who don’t ski, you do not want to have to put on ski boots with a bone bruise in your shin. But Vonn looks to be recovering nicely as she had the fastest training time in the downhill. If you don’t catch Vonn skiing in the Olympics, be sure to check her out in the new Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.
Another top story on the men’s side of the slopes was the triumphant return of Bode Miller who won the Bronze in the men’s downhill. Many considered this as big of a victory as a gold medal because Miller was once thought to be done with skiing after admitting to skiing while intoxicated, a few injuries, and a terrible 2009 season.
The U.S. Hockey team won its first game with a 3-1 victory over Switzerland. They will have their work cut out for them, though, with host Canada, led by Sidney Crosby, being the favorite. Many say that Canada will see the entire Olympics as a failure if they do not bring home gold in Hockey.
Whether you like the Bobsled or Curling, Biathlon or Hockey, there is something for everyone at the Winter Olympics. Be sure to tune into NBC and other affiliated networks through February 28th as American athletes seek to prove they are the best in the world.
