Going Trayless is Brainless

Editor, The Tiger:

This just amazes me. Hampden-Sydney College wants to go green, be environmentally friendly, just like all of the other colleges and universities. First was the promotion of recycling at Hamden-Sydney. The green cause is fine as long as we are not forced to recycle. Last time I checked, the college does not force us to recycle. However, the college now wants to go “trayless” in the cafeteria. As far as I know, the college does not force us to use a tray in the cafeteria. Most students use a tray so they can carry their food and drinks from the serving line to their table in one trip. It is more efficient and time saving to use a tray, especially on those days when there are long lines in the cafeteria. Eliminating the trays will make students take multiple trips. The argument for going trayless goes something like this. Going trayless will save water. It is our obligation as good citizens to save the planet. Saving water will make Al Gore happy. UC Berkeley was one of the first colleges to make the “trayless” argument, claiming that California is facing its worst water shortage in 88 years. UC Berkeley forgot to mention that one major reason for the water shortage in California is because existing water supplies have been restricted in order to preserve an endangered specie, a small minnow called the delta smelt. After eliminating our trays, I promise you that this green movement at Hampden-Sydney will continue with other ideas such as a move to ban the use incandescent light bulbs in our dorm rooms. This is a symptom of a larger problem in our society. Today a class of intellectual elites believe they know what is best for us and we are being forced to change for our own good. We are losing individualism in favor of ever-increasing control of our daily life. Students that want to go trayless have always had the option not to use a tray. Hampden-Sydney is one of the last bastions of the individual. Do not let the cancer of political correctness infect our great institution, and destroy its greatest asset—

the freethinking individual.
